IWD Inspirational Female Founders Spotlight: Clara Canals

I am Clara Canals. I grew up in Barcelona and at 19 years old I founded The Barcelona Tequila Trading Company where I am currently responsible for international sales and marketing for our main product Goya Tequila. A Tequila I have designed and created from scratch with help from a team of very talented agave farmers and tequila distillers.
We are a small company located in Barcelona, in the Catalonian region of Spain. Our company specialises in the production of 100% natural, chemical-free alcoholic beverages and has created the world’s first seasonal, artisanal, micro-batch tequila.

We created Goya Tequila in 2016 with the help and guidance from leading Michelin starred restaurants in Spain with the goal of creating the purest and cleanest alcohol product ever made for consumption. The design of the bottle is meant to represent the simplicity and pureness of the product inside and we take pride in being on the forefront of tequila producers that take the environment into consideration when growing and producing Goya.

What would you love to share to encourage other women to start their own company ?

Honestly, I don’t think encouraging blindly people to start their own company is a good idea. Being an entrepreneur is in many ways a luxury because you are your own boss. You are able to distribute and control your own time, but it’s not a job, it’s a never stopping project. Being an entrepreneur it’s not for everyone, which is why most startups fail. My main advice to people who don’t want a conventional “day to day” job is normally to find a good partner. Don’t start a company by yourself, its a long and hard journey and two heads are better than one… Surround yourself with talented and inspirational characters and work with people that want to work with you. In the end, what separates you and your company from the competition is not only your product but the people who designs, builds and sells it. I am a firm believer that team work is the most powerful asset you will ever have for free.

What are your 5 top tips for entrepreneurial success?

 Turn negatives into positives.

Find your niche.

Listen to people and try to understand their point of view, but just because they have an opinion does not mean you should listen to it. Remember that you are the best person for your business.

Everything takes longer time than anticipated. Be prepared for that both financially and mentally.

Find a mentor you can lean your self on. Preferably someone that challenge you and your theories.
