Jessica Morgan is founder of Carnsight Communications, a five year-old PR and communications consultancy based near Bath. She worked in London for 15 years before starting up on her own, first in advertising and then PR positions. She now oversees a team of four and specialises in helping small and creative businesses get better known. Outside of work she is married with two children, a lively Cockapoo and a passion for her growing garden.
What would you love to share to encourage other women to start their own company?
It took other people saying that I should do it to really convince me to start up on my own. Which is funny as I found the one thing I needed when I started was great self-belief. At the start, I very often forced myself to say “I can” when inside, I was screaming “I can’t”. But guess what, I could! It’s been five years now and every day is part of the journey. There are ups and downs (very often both in the same day). But the opportunity is there for you to shape how you’d like to work – your hours, your model, if you’d like a team around you or would prefer to do it yourself. It’s all up for grabs. Just don’t forget to pause once in a while, turn around and admire what you’ve created.
What are your top tips for entrepreneurial success?
Don’t feel alone – there are so many great networks out there to support you
Invest in things you’re not so good at – maybe it’s admin, maybe accounting
Remember, you’re in charge, not your clients, not anyone else: you
If you’re wavering, say yes to opportunities
Confidence is key – but you can absolutely fake it at first
