Inspirational Female Founder Spotlight: Fiona Moss

Not your average career and business coach, Fiona Moss supports women to uncover their purpose and challenge the norm, to do work which allows them to live a life beyond their wildest dreams. Her mission is to normalize ‘starting again’ as an adult, helping her clients to create a life that they love through her straight-talking no BS approach — rather than staying stuck in a career, and life, they hate. For some that means leaving the corporate world who she supports through her program PURPOSE. For others she supports them through her business start-up program WILD. Fiona’s vision for 2022 is to help 100 women to find their purpose and step into a fulfilling career and life they love. Fiona is also a location independent business owner and loves to share her experiences of building a business whilst working remotely.

Can you tell us a little about your background and the company?

I was brought up in a very ‘normal’ UK family. I got good grades in school, went to university, got a good job in London and I started out on my career path.

But despite a successful career as a retail buyer managing a category worth £625m, I decided it wasn’t enough, I wasn’t fulfilled, I wanted to do something different, something with more purpose, I wanted to see more, live my life more rather than just being stuck in a city and ‘climbing the ladder’.

So I decided to set up my own business, but most importantly I decided to set up a remote business where I could live wherever I want. Freedom and adventure are two of my key values and I knew I wanted to create a business that allowed me to live and work remotely.

Now I run a company where I get to support women to uncover their purpose and challenge the norm, to do work which allows them to live a life beyond their wildest dreams.

My mission is to normalize ‘starting again’ as an adult, helping my clients to create a life that they love through my straight-talking no BS approach — rather than staying stuck in a career, and life, they hate. For some that means leaving the corporate world who I support through my program PURPOSE. For others I support them through my business start-up program WILD. My vision for 2022 is to help 100 women to find their purpose and step into a fulfilling career and life they love.

I also support location independent business owners to level up their business and lifestyle.

I am also the founder of the You First podcast where I explore topics such as resilience, purpose and self-doubt as well as looking at how to create choice, take control of your life and live a life with purpose.

I have been travelling through LATAM for the last 6 months and I am currently living in Mexico.

How did the idea come to you for the company?

As I had a major career pivot at 28 my inspiration for setting up my own business was to inspire other women to not be afraid to take the same leap. I was so disconnected from my purpose at that time and I know what it feels like to be in that place. I want to help shift the perspective on when we can change career and the truth is it can happen at any age; we just need to listen to the voice that is telling us it’s time to try something new that really lights us up.

How did you achieve awareness?

Instagram has been an amazing platform for establishing and growing my business. It has enabled me to connect and develop relationships with my target market on such a personal level. I love the immediate interaction you can have but also the intimacy.

Collaborations have also been huge for me, whether that has been running a workshop with someone, being a guest on their podcast, or having them on mine, collaborations have been a great way to reach a wider audience.

How have you been able to gain funding and grow?

So far, my business is self-funded

What are the key successes?

Scaling my business and offering both group and 1:1 coaching

Launching my own podcast, You First

Building a successful business which I run remotely from anywhere!

What were/are the challenges and how have you overcome these?

Overcoming personal tragedy while juggling my business growth has been a challenge. I have done an incredible amount of work on myself, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, asking myself really hard questions, facing the truth. Whether that has been through getting to coach myself, therapy, energy healing, or other self-led practices like meditation and journaling, I have (and do still) fully commit to overcoming whatever life throws at me.

What are your plans now/for the future?

This year I will be continuing to work remotely and travel to Mexico, Europe and North America. Travel is a big part of my life, and my own self development. Over the summer I will be spending time in the UK, running workshops and in person events. I will also be launching new programmes this year and supporting more incredible humans on their amazing journey! I also run a charity, the Natalie Kate Moss Trust and this is our 10 year anniversary so there are a lot of events happening this year to celebrate that.

What would you like to share with others to encourage them to start their own entrepreneurship journey?

Keep trying new things. Don’t expect results straight away, expect to fail and fail more – but learn from each one of those failures.

The more you fail, the more you will learn. Show up every day. Some days may feel like a quantum leap, but most others won’t. But it is what you do on those days that lead to the quantum leap. Strategy is important but the work you do on yourself is just as important, so don’t neglect it.

Can you share your top tips for entrepreneurial success?

Resilience is a skill that I have honed since I started my business and continues to be instrumental to my success. One of the first difficult hurdles I experienced was early on in my business when I launched a course that no one signed up for. As a new coach this is not unusual, but it can be easy to see something like that as a failure rather than a learning curve and to move past it. Setbacks are an inevitable part of building a business, but I feel I have fine-tuned my ability to move through setbacks with more ease now.

Being Bold is a huge part of my personal and business philosophy. For me it has meant taking steps and action when I haven’t been ready. For example, investing in 5 figure coaches and mentors to support my development. This has required me to really get connected to my vision of what I want to create and focused on the results I want to see. Investing in yourself is part of the business journey and you have to be able to reframe how you think about financial investments in particular.

Creating focus and staying committed to your goals and vision is crucial. Keep going back to your why and your purpose if you feel disconnected or unmotivated. This has helped me in challenging times because I am clear on what my direction is.

Who are the 5 people who inspire you the most and why?

1) My clients – They inspire me to do the best job I can for them

2) Michelle Obama – Influential, but real and honest and relatable, authentic

3) Lauren Steadman – Para Olympian who proved that it doesn’t matter what challenges you face, you can achieve anything

4) Brene Brown – Her honesty in her publications is so real and so inspiring and making changes across the world.

5) My coaches – I have had so many of the years and each one of them have inspired me to dig deeper into what is important for me.

What are your favourite inspirational /motivational quotes?

Nothing changes if nothing changes. This resonates with me because it means we have to take responsibility and do something differently if we want a different outcome or results. Unfortunately, so many people sit and wait for life to happen for them and it doesn’t work like that. We have to consciously create what we want and put ourselves in the game. We all need to take more individual responsibility for the direction of our own lives. If you want something to change, you need to change it.
