Inspirational Female Founder Spotlight: Odette & Sara, Mummy’s Organics

Mummy’s Organics was founded in 2020 by mother-daughter team Odette & Sara. Odette is a practising midwife with over 20 years of experience and a mother of 4 herself. Sara is an expert in diet and nutrition and the business mind with a Master’s Degree in Business Management.

Can you tell us a little about your background and the company?

All of our products have been developed by a team of midwives, who have used scientific research and specialist knowledge to create the most effective natural remedies to commonly face issues during motherhood.

Every product is also made using organic, fair trade, safe, non-toxic and environmentally conscious ingredients. It was incredibly important to us that solid environmental values underpin everything we do, from using recyclable packaging and labelling to supporting sustainable agriculture and supply chains.

For example, our tea packaging is plastic-free and 100% biodegradable. Our teabags are made from Non-GMO sugar cane, the inner sleeves look and feel like plastic but are made from plant-based materials and can be home composted and the outer boxes are recyclable cardboard. We wanted to meet the needs of our customers but not in a way that comprises their health and the planet.

How did the idea come to you for the company?

As Odette is a midwife, the business all started with her. For years she’s been mixing oils together to make massage oils and making our breast milk booster tea blend for her clients to help increase their breast milk production.

The idea actually stemmed from her clients asking to buy more for themselves or friends and family. Funny enough Odette’s breastfeeding tea blend has inspired a breastfeeding recipe in the cookbook of a Top UK Food chain owner – we can’t say who. But all of these things inspired us to begin creating a line of wellness teas specially created to naturally solve issues during maternity.

Once we began our research we noticed that there was a real lack of organic, eco-friendly and natural products on the market for women during pregnancy. This also inspired us to create a natural skincare range alongside our wellness teas to create a one-stop shop for solving issues during motherhood.

How did you achieve awareness?

We have been gaining awareness of our brand through our social media presence, marketing, PR, shopping platforms and running promotional giveaways.

How have you been able to gain funding and grow?

When we first started Mummy’s Organics we financed the business ourselves using personal funds. But to expand the business through creating more products, improving our branding and marketing we took out a Start Up Loan.

What are the key successes?

As of recently our key successes have been expanding our business and seeing the popularity of our products being sold abroad in the US and Europe. Our products have also been featured in articles including ‘Best New Baby Brand to have on your radar in 2022’ & ‘The perfect baby shower gifts for mum and baby’ from top UK press including HELLO Magazine. As the founders of Mummy’s Organics, it has been a massive personal and business success to see return customers and the amazing reviews of our products.

What were/are the challenges and how have you overcome these?

Burnout is real – make sure you prioritise taking time off to maximise your potential. As a business owner, you may feel guilty for taking time off or feel like you’ve got too much work to do. The truth is you will work more efficiently and increase motivation after a few days off compared to when you have burnout.

Identify areas of stress in your business such as managing social media and if possible try outsourcing these tasks. This will not only reduce your stress and improve your mental health but will also help grow your business and increase your chance of success.

What are your plans now/for the future?

Our immediate plans are to continue to grow our business and create more awareness of our brand through PR and Marketing. We also have a new baby range in the pipeline. We are extremely excited about the future and hope to bring more educational content, advice and workshops to our customers.

What would you like to share with others to encourage them to start their own entrepreneurship journey?

Starting your own business is not for the faint of heart but it is truly rewarding. You will find fulfilment in the small things such as receiving a new order, gaining a new customer, having a positive review and seeing your creation grow. If you have an idea that you’re passionate about it, take a risk

Can you share you top tips for entrepreneurial success?

  • Start with the problem. Understanding what problem your customer has and why the products or services currently offered do not solve it and how yours does.
  • Outsource! Starting your own business with limited funding you will try to do as much as you can yourself. From marketing, social media, branding but if you can you should try to take advantage of individual experts and outsource as much as you can.
  • Our top tip for product-based businesses would be to try our every platform for selling your products to customers, till you find a winning combination that works for you. This not only creates multiple different income streams but also markets your product and gains brand awareness. For example, we are on Amazon, Etsy, Yumbles, Faire Wholesale and the list goes on.

What are your favourite inspirational /motivational quotes?

“Failure is part of the process of success. People who avoid failure also avoid success.” – Robert T. Kiyosaki

We think stories of failures are just as important as stories of success. Believing in our brand and what we have to offer has pushed us through self-doubt and launched our idea off the ground. Taking risks is part of business, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t, it’s about how you deal with failure and learn from it that’s important.

Be proud of what you have achieved. As an entrepreneur, you can always be looking forward to success – waiting for your business to really take off. Having the idea, starting your own business, effectively executing it and having customers purchase your product makes it a success, be proud of what you have accomplished so far.
