Positioned on the corner of First Avenue and Fifth Avenue in Brixton Village, Tabitha Rout’s shop Circus opened in Spring 2010 and was one of the first in a new generation of businesses that helped usher in the Brixton Village renaissance. Tabitha studied textiles and has had a career designing clothes, working as a landscape garden designer and selling at Portobello market. Tabitha brings her sense of adventure and unique eye to Circus Brixton which is a carefully curated little gem of a shop. Colourful, beautiful and refined with a careful curation of vintage and contemporary pieces, Circus has become a magnet for interiors professionals and the discerning shopper.
What would you love to share to encourage other women to start their own company?
I would say the most important thing for women starting their own business is to not be afraid, be the ultimate student, absorb and acquire information and ideas from every avenue. Gain forensic knowledge in your chosen field and never stop learning – master your craft.
What are your 5 top tips for entrepreneurial success?
Resilience – Be prepared for rejection and failure
Self-Belief – In your field and the vision for your business
Preparation – Be prepared do as much research as possible
Break Rules – Don’t be afraid to break some and step into the unknown
Be Yourself – Once you have done all of the research make sure that you keep your individual identity
