Lucy Goff is the founder of LYMA, the pioneering wellness and beauty brand she launched in 2018, after experiencing a life-changing health crisis following the birth of her first child. Determined to bring scientifically proven, medical-grade innovation to consumers, LYMA’s inaugural launch was a Supplement formulated of patented, peer-reviewed ingredients at proven doses. Since then, Lucy has expanded the brand with the introduction of highly advanced low level laser technology, leading in with the LYMA Laser, the first FDA-cleared clinical-grade, at-home beauty device, followed by the LYMA PRO, a device three times the size and power. LYMA Skincare launched in 2023 as a groundbreaking skincare protocol able to address the root causes of epigenetic aging.
Lucy’s reputation as a visionary leader in the industry has been recognised multiple times. Most recently she was featured on the first ever Forbes 50 Over 50 global list, as well as being named Woman of the Year at the everywoman Entrepreneur Awards and honoured as a Changemaker at the EY Entrepreneur of The Year™ awards. A former fashion journalist and luxury publicist, Lucy has leveraged her expertise to position LYMA at the forefront of science-driven beauty and wellness.
Can you tell us a little about your background and your company?
My career began in journalism and PR, where I developed a deep understanding of storytelling and the power of challenging conventional thinking. I’ve always been drawn to innovation—identifying that spark of something truly groundbreaking and bringing it to light. That drive became personal when, after a severe health battle, I experienced firsthand the transformative effects of a scientifically proven supplement—one that, up to that point, was largely confined to the medical world. Realizing that this innovation wasn’t reaching the people who needed it most, I knew something had to change. That’s why I founded LYMA; I’ve always believed in championing movements that push boundaries and reshape perspectives. True change happens when we dare to rethink what’s possible, and LYMA is here to lead a wellbeing revolution that’s firmly based in scientific endeavour.
What inspired you to start your business?
LYMA was born from a deeply personal struggle. After battling septicaemia following the birth of my daughter, I was left depleted—until a chance meeting with Professor Paul Clayton introduced me to evidence-based nutraceuticals. Unlike generic supplements, these were clinically proven and transformed my health within weeks. That experience inspired me to make this groundbreaking science accessible to others.
The same drive led to the LYMA Laser. Low-level laser therapy had been used in medical settings for decades, but never made the leap across to beauty. We challenged leading scientists to re-engineer this powerful technology into a safe, handheld device—now recognized as the most significant beauty innovation of a generation. My mission has always been to put the power of breakthrough science back into the hands of consumers, making cutting-edge innovation accessible to everyone seeking real change.
How did you create awareness for your brand?
We built awareness of LYMA by leveraging the power of PR and creating intrigue. The secret to successful PR is knowing what the media wants. With my background in journalism and PR, I understood that a compelling story needs every ingredient—something new, a strong case study, and credible voices. Unlike a simple product shot for a lipstick or handbag, LYMA’s benefits couldn’t be seen on a page. We had to explain them through expert insights and real-life transformations in trusted publications.
Initially, we secured two major PR hits, which led to our first 1,000 customers almost overnight and once momentum built, we quickly scaled to meet global demand. Though we launched in the UK, international interest poured in, so within weeks, we introduced worldwide shipping—turning LYMA into a truly global brand.
What strategies helped you secure funding and scale your business?
Securing funding for LYMA was one of our biggest challenges. When I initially approached investment companies, I faced unanimous rejection. Investors didn’t believe consumers would be willing to spend £150 a month on a supplement, especially when cheaper options were available. It was tough, and I knew that getting funding right at the start was crucial, as the wrong choice could have serious implications down the line.
But rather than bending to the pressure, I made the bold decision to remortgage my house and fund the business myself. It was a huge risk—perhaps the craziest thing I could have done—but I believed in LYMA, and it paid off. After launching, we sold out in just two weeks, which proved the market demand.
Interestingly, the very investment companies that had turned me down came back after our success, wanting to invest. But by then, I knew that if they’d doubted me once, they could doubt me again down the line. So we sought investment from a new Venture Capital Trust (VCT) that we hadn’t spoken to before, ensuring we started with a fresh page and the right partners. I’ve always believed that getting the right funding and partners from the start is crucial—whether it’s personal or business money—and in this case, betting on myself paid off.
What have been your biggest successes so far?
On a professional note, being named one of the trailblazers on the Forbes 50 Over 50 global list was a huge honor. It’s incredibly inspiring to be part of a group of women breaking barriers and redefining success.
As for LYMA’s greatest successes, they have been and still remain, the powerful stories of transformation we hear from our customers. Whether it’s someone using the LYMA Laser to reduce a surgical scar, a woman confidently wearing a V-neck again after a decade, or a customer calming her rosacea after exhausting every other option—these real-life impacts are the true measure of our success. We say that LYMA is transformational and these very real experiences showcase that.
What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as an entrepreneur has been balancing the drive to innovate, with the realities of regulations and market skepticism. With LYMA, we’re introducing products that redefine the expectations for their categories, and navigating the restrictions around that takes a lot of patience and persistence.
There’s also a fundamental layer of education involved in communicating such new technology and groundbreaking ingredients that’s essential to their becoming a success. We’ve had to continually prove the scientific backing of our products and explain why they’re different from what’s currently on the market. While this path is far from easy, overcoming these obstacles strengthens LYMA’s mission and my determination to keep pushing boundaries in the wellness industry.
What are your plans for the future?
We’ve just upgraded the LYMA Supplement with the addition of a groundbreaking new ingredient— a patented adaptogen that studies have found to mimic some of the effects of exercise, such as boosting energy production and supporting metabolic processes. It acts like ‘exercise in a pill,’ making it ideal for busy people looking to improve their wellbeing. Metabolic health is integral to long-term conditions, so as well as aiding ‘the now’ this is also a world class ingredient for future health.
Beyond that, our global science team recently completed some exciting research that will drive our next launch. It’s still under wraps, but we’re eager to share what’s coming—watch this space!
What advice would you give to aspiring female entrepreneurs?
Believe in yourself. I am heavily dyslexic and when I was at school, I was told that I couldn’t achieve big things and that I should limit my expectations, and yet, here I am. You have to remember that it’s your journey and your timeline and you will have to become your own belief system. Focus on the many roads to success, you might have to change the way you get there, but get there you will.
What are your top three tips for entrepreneurial success?
The biggest rewards usually come from having the guts and perseverance to create your own path. It’s not always easy, but the courage to follow your dreams will pay off. You only live once—make it count.
Slow progress is still progress. Keep showing up, even on the hard days – your effort will compound over time.
Where you are is not who you are. Your current circumstances don’t define you. Trust in your potential and the effort you’re putting in today because they are what truly matter.
Who are five people who inspire you the most, and why?
Jo Malone has always been a huge inspiration to me. She took a simple commodity—a candle—and transformed it into a luxury lifestyle product, showing that it’s possible to reimagine something ordinary and make it extraordinary. This mindset helped me think about LYMA not just as a supplement, but as a transformative experience.
I’m also deeply inspired by women like Martha Stewart, who was 41 when she published her first cookbook and went on to build an empire. Arianna Huffington, who founded The Huffington Post at 55, completely redefined the news industry.
My friend Bella Freud, at 63, continues to be as innovative and creative as ever. These women prove that age is no barrier to making bold moves and redefining success on your own terms. They inspire me every day.
Lastly, my daughter constantly amazes me with her logical, fresh approach to life. She challenges me to think differently and reminds me to let go of past fears and embrace new perspectives
