Female Founder Spotlight: Becca Powers

As part of our popular Female Founder Spotlight series, we were delighted to catch up with the inspirational Becca Powers, to learn more about her exciting entrepreneurship journey.

Can you tell us a little about your background and the company?

I formed Becca Powers Coaching originally back in 2008. As a Fortune 500 sales leader by the age of 30 I found myself coaching woman in their career. As time progressed, I continued to pursue my career efforts as well as coaching women on the side. The more I career coached the more I realized that there was an element missing, and that was the life coaching piece. Today, although I still coach career-driven woman, I coach from the perspective of understanding their whole life and what’s holding them back from the desires they hold most dear. Turning my practice into career and life coaching. This ultimately inspired me to write my first book written in memoir/self-help style to illustrate using my career peaks and valleys as the example that true happiness and success stems from being able to except all of who we are – the personal and professional aspects.

How did the idea come to you for the company?

It happened naturally. I found myself mentoring coworkers and friends on what to do next in their career or how to stand out from their peers to help their career progress along. After seeing progression with my mentees, I decide to formalize my coaching practice.

How did you achieve awareness?

Working full-time as a mom and mentoring on the side, although fulfilling, I needed to charge an hourly rate for my time. I was beginning to feel depleted because I didn’t have strong boundaries and I really wanted to help everyone that asked for help. I realized after beginning to feel drained that I need to charge for my time as well as formalize my services. Once this happened, I was more selective with who I worked with and it fit much better in my schedule as a mom that was also working full-time.

How have you been able to gain funding and grow?

I have built myself up from the bottom. I don’t have a magical story for funding other than I worked my butt off. I went from a minimum wage dollar store employee to a multi-six figure Fortune 500 hi-tech sales executive. My funding grew organically and formalizing my coaching practices certainly helped me self-fund.

What are the key successes?

The key success for me are seeing my clients grow and change. To see my client’s step into their power and own their work in their careers by receiving promotions into roles they were qualified for, advancing into positions with different companies, and asking for the pay the deserve is an incredible experience. To be their guide as they learn to prioritize themselves, set boundaries, and get clear on their desires opens so much room for happiness in their personal lives. Seeing their relationships improve, their health improve, and their income improve is the best gift a coach can receive! And that is how I am able to measure my success.

As for personal accomplishments, writing and publishing my first book, Harness Your Inner CEO: Rise Into Your Power, Passion, and Prosperity has been such a personal accomplishment that I am proud of.

What were/are the challenges and how have you overcome these?

Personally, I have had to overcome burnout several times. Because I am a highly passionate person and I enjoy the fullness of life, I have tendency to take on too much. I have learned that my body is the first indicator that I have too much on my plate by the tension in my shoulders, the increasing anxiety, and exhaustion that sets in. I used to ignore these things and now I honor them instead. I am perfectly OK with adjusting my life and schedule to a slower pace until I feel energized again. Recognizing the signs as a way of my body communicating with me that things are not OK and honoring them was a game changer in my ability to rebound and keep working on things that I’m passionate about like being a mom, working a full-time career that I love, and building a coaching practice that is making an impact. I learned that when I thrive so does everything else I care about.

What are your plans now/for the future?

With my book publishing in the autumn of 2021, my focus will shift to group coaching and live events. I need to evolve my coaching practice to be able to serve more people at once. This is phase I am super excited about! I will still have a few private clients. However, I really looking forward to connecting with more women and guiding them to powerful change.

What would you like to share with others to encourage them to start their own entrepreneurship journey?

Everything changes so much and there is no way you can foresee all the outcomes.  My recommendation is don’t overthink, over plan, and over strategize too much. Your business will grow and change into what it’s meant to be organically if you just start and then keep going. Be open and willing to accept help and say yes to opportunity!

Can you share you top tips for entrepreneurial success?

Be like Nike and just do it!

Say yes to help and to partnerships when it aligns to you.

80% is the new 100% – you don’t have to have it all figured out.

Who are the 5 people who inspire you the most?

Jessie Andres LinkedIn @JessieAndres

Jessie is personal friend and business colleague. She is another fellow woman in tech who has owned her worth and has had a very remarkable career. She is also a working mom. She does both so gracefully that it inspires me. Plus, she has always been that person that has seen my talent and gifts even when I haven’t been.

Jillian Mansolf LinkedIn @JillianMansolf

Jillian is one of my mentors and is a VP of Sales at Dell. Inc. She emulates so many strengths and skills I see in myself. She has mastered many skills that I am still looking to master within myself.

Joyce Worthy IG @jworthyrealestate_broker

Is a friend and former member of one of the sales teams I led. I always saw her fire and knew she was destined for great things. She became a realtor and was working that business on the side until it grew to the point that she was able to make that her full-time gig. Still in her 20’s she is selling multi-million dollar homes through her own brokerage firm! She never believed when other people told her that her dreams were too big!

Nancy Levin @nancy_levin

Working with Nancy has been a game changer for me. As a master coach Nancy has worked with me as one of her private clients. I also recently got certified as a Life Coach in her LLCA certification process. All of her work is fantastic and focuses on breaking free from limited beliefs that hold us back from truly shining and stepping up into our confidence to actualize our dreams. She is great tole model for me.

Chalene Johnson IG @chalenejohnson

This is a new influencer for me. I just started following her a couple weeks ago. I love how she so brilliantly discuss being success-driven, a mom, and doing it all with ADHD. Having ADHD myself it has helped me embrace it even more. It is something I am open about discussing. Yet, she does it in such a fun and informative way.
