Stems Wilder is an ecologically influenced florist, deeply attracted to the natural world founded and run by Milena Mackowiak. The humble Brixton Village studio brings the local area up to date with the latest floristry trends, delivering fresh cut-stem and dry flower designs consciously arranged to show off the natural beauty of our planet’s flora. In-store you’ll find ridiculously beautiful vases, ceramics, greeting cards, candles, flower presses and prints created by (mostly female!) independent makers.
After graduating from university in Poland, Milena decided to change her life and move to London. Working for fashion brands as a visual merchandiser, she quickly found herself wanting to do something more creative and closer to nature. And so in the middle of the pandemic, Milena launched Stems Wilder and pursued her passion, seeing her brand quickly grow and garner a loyal following.
What would you love to share to encourage other women to start their own company?
Starting your own business is scary, but if you have passion for what you do and work hard on your ideas it will pay off. It is good to be in a present moment and think realistically, but what really helps is to dream big. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. Anything and everything is possible, you just need to find your own path to get there.
What are your 5 top tips for entrepreneurial success?
Give it your everything
Don’t be scared to dream big
Stay open minded
Go with the flow
Send out positivity
Who are the 5 women who inspire you the most?
I was always inspired by female artists who made it in the art world despite it being a 90% white-male world:
Frida Kahlo
Kara Walker
Marina Abramović
Tracey Emin
Claude Cahun
And so many more!
What is your favourite saying/inspirational quote?
I don’t have one, but I guess the closest to what I’m like on a daily basis is simply “do you”
