IWD Inspirational Female Founder Spotlight: Emma J Shipley

Emma J Shipley
is an incredibly talented independent British designer, artist and entrepreneur who has grown her passion for nature, mythology, and storytelling into an award-winning global brand.

Can you tell us a little about your background and your company?
I’m a British artist and designer, and I founded my brand, Emma J Shipley, to bring my unique hand-drawn designs to life across luxury fashion and interiors. My work is inspired by nature, mythology, and fantasy, and I love weaving intricate, storytelling elements into every piece. From silk scarves to wallpaper and cushions, each design is a mix of the wild and the surreal, crafted with a commitment to quality and sustainability, made to inspire.

What inspired you to start your business?
I’ve always been passionate about drawing and nature. While studying at the Royal College of Art, I explored bringing my love for fantasy literature, science and nature together, to create illustrative designs for fashion and interiors. I wanted to create prints that were fun and whimsical but still sophisticated. I had a really strong reaction to my graduate show; I took orders on silk scarves and I was approached by a number of brands to do collaborations. Winning the Texprint Award and showing my work in Paris and at London Fashion Week gave me the push to launch my own brand.

How did you create awareness for your brand?
From the start, I focused on storytelling and visual identity – from a distinctive aesthetic to beautiful packaging. Collaborations with renowned brands like Aspinal of London, Swarovski and Disney helped introduce my designs to wider audiences. Social media and email has also been key – my brand isn’t for everyone but those who are into it really love it! I’ve built a loyal community that engages with the magical worlds I create.

What strategies helped you secure funding and scale your business?
I initially secured funding through grants and competitions, such as the WGSN award and the UK Fashion & Textile Awards. As we grew, strategic partnerships and collaborations helped us scale without massive upfront investment. Retail partnerships with Liberty and Harrods gave us visibility, and a strong direct-to-consumer approach on our e-commerce site helped drive sustainable growth.

What have been your biggest successes so far?
Seeing my designs stocked in some of the world’s most prestigious stores, including Harrods and Liberty.
Winning awards, including the WGSN Global Fashion Award for Emerging Brand.
Expanding into home interiors, having started with silk scarves, a natural evolution of my designs.
Building an engaged, passionate community around the brand.
Working with Disney on a Star Wars collection of scarves & cushions; one of my favourite collections having been a childhood fan!

What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Scaling production while maintaining sustainability and quality has been a challenge. I’ve worked closely with trusted manufacturers to ensure ethical production. Another challenge was navigating Covid, which forced a shift toward a more digital-first strategy. We focused on online storytelling and community engagement, which strengthened our direct-to-consumer business. Post-Covid, our challenges are trying to introduce new product lines and grow the business, while having to adapt quickly to changes in consumer behaviour.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m always exploring new ways to bring my artwork to life. Expanding our homeware range and more exciting collaborations are on the horizon. Sustainability is also a key focus; continuing to explore more eco-friendly materials and production methods.
