I can’t think of a more special way to enjoy Paris and the surrounding regions -the ship itself was a luxurious retreat and the ideal home for this festive journey. The Viking Longship, with its contemporary Scandinavian design, provided a warm and inviting atmosphere. Cabins were thoughtfully designed with plush bedding, ample storage, and floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that offered stunning river views. Many guests spent quiet moments watching the serene winter landscapes glide by from the comfort of their private verandas.
Onboard dining was exceptional, highlighting the culinary artistry Viking is known for. The chefs prepared regionally inspired dishes such as Coq au Vin and Normandy apple tarts, paired perfectly with fine French wines. Guests could also indulge in seasonal treats, from rich hot chocolate to delicate holiday pastries, making each meal a celebration of the senses. The Aquavit Terrace was particularly memorable, offering alfresco dining opportunities even in the cooler weather, thanks to its cosy and heated design.

In Vernon, the cobblestone streets and half-timbered houses were like a scene from a Christmas card. Guests visited Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, which came alive with its winter markets, twinkling decorations, and a charming outdoor skating rink nestled in Square Verdrel.
One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to Château Gaillard, the imposing fortress built by Richard the Lionheart. Perched high above the Seine, the castle offered panoramic views of the frosty hills and the river winding below. The guided tours at this site and others brought the region’s history to life, immersing guests in tales of medieval France. We also made another stop on our travels to indulge in a little festive Calvados tasting, which all enjoyed!
The Christmas Markets
No Christmas cruise would be complete without a stroll through the region’s famous holiday markets. Guests relished the opportunity to browse handcrafted gifts, from intricate ornaments to artisan soaps. The aroma of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts filled the air, and sampling local delicacies like buttery crêpes and spiced gingerbread was a treat for all.
